Trends Heading into 2023

As we brace ourselves for what will be sure to be another dynamic year in digital assets, we hope that the year will treat us kinder than the one that just passed. But the team remains cautiously optimistic, and even if the beginning of 2023 may still be difficult for markets, we see a lot of potential in the trends that have been shaped by the recent events that happened in 2022.

As is often the case, the trends are quite broad, but we expect movement and progress being made on multiple levels for different audiences. We’re excited to see the progress in the coming months, as always bear markets are great times for development!

DeFi

Trading volume on DEXes went up nearly 11% immediately after the FTX collapse in November last year. Many in the industry understood that the collapse of FTX and the use of user funds was only possible in a centralized exchange, and saw it as a reminder of the benefits that decentralization had to offer. We expect DeFi exchanges to continue to run strong, while focusing more on fine tuning the smart contracts, increasing security measures and finding ways to bridge the decentralized and centralized divide.

While DeFi has often been linked to decentralized exchanges, it is far from the only thing that falls within the space. The promise of decentralized exchanges holds many benefits, however, understandably there are those that don’t yet feel comfortable navigating through the decentralized world with technical jargon, smart contracts and may be put off by previous hacks. So to those, the middle ground may be in the process of making the transition, taking the first step by simply paying attention to their wallets.

We’ve constantly reminded our community members in the past to explore a variety of different wallet options, and to refrain from keeping their tokens solely in their exchange wallets. While there’s a slew of different hot wallets that allow you to hold your own key (names such as Metamask and Trust Wallet) there’s even safer cold wallet options such as Ledger and Trezor. The move towards owning your own keys and holding custody for your tokens surely can be considered the first step for those that want to understand the digital asset market more. And with people like Tony Fadell joining Ledger, it hopefully will be only a matter of time before the intimidating “technical” things like a cold wallet become user-friendly enough to be integrated into daily use.

Naturally we’ve spoken of DeFi for years already, and we believe the trend will continue on. Centralized exchanges are great until things go wrong– and as history has shown, it can go very wrong. So while those that are more comfortable in the space are left to develop and strengthen the technical side of decentralization, we look forward to companies making inroads to developing user-centric consumer friendly solutions allowing for greater adoption.

Zero Knowledge Technology

Aside from the crypto market, there’s the blockchain technology that often gets overshadowed when it comes to conversation. But zero knowledge technology is also the backbone to what might make Web 3.0 a success.

Much of the conversation surrounding Web3 at the moment first began with emphasis on data privacy, a shift from big data to decentralized platforms. The discussion then moved to Metaverses and logging in with wallet addresses and more in the shift to Web 3.0. Yet when the proposition of Web 3.0 is to tie one’s identity to their wallet address, and it all exists on the blockchain, much of the information can be linked together. Rather than data mining from enclosed platforms, much of the information will be available on a public blockchain.

The bridge that Web3 can offer with the security and privacy to the world of Web 3.0 relies heavily on building the technology surrounding data privacy and zero knowledge. The future of Web 3.0 will (or should) depend on the industry finding ways to ensure data privacy; moving it from a marketing endeavor to a truly useful tool for users.

Regulatory Extremes

Unfortunately the evolution of technology and the social factors that surround it are not always on a linear pathway. Sometimes it may require one step back before taking two steps forward.

After the issues that the market faced from Terra Luna and FTX, governments and regulators around the world have been facing pressure from the general public to clamp down on the crypto space and enforce stricter regulations. And as we’ve shared in the past, we believe that clearer regulations are beneficial to developers as well as the general public. However, if the regulatory measures taken are so restrictive that it doesn’t allow for growth in the space, we worry it will stifle innovation.

Many regulators have felt the pressure and ultimately, blame, for not properly regulating the crypto industry. We may expect regulators to move in a more conservative direction, and in some jurisdictions an extreme crackdown to demonstrate their eagerness to prevent a second crisis. While this may be difficult for the market and developers during this period of time, there’s hope that with time, a deeper understanding and rollback of the rules, such as in the case with Hong Kong, will provide more opportunities for the market then.

GameFi

While games like Axie Infinity have cooled down this space over the latter half of 2022, the correlation between gaming, blockchain and digital assets like NFTs still remain strong. Whether it is established games bridging over to the GameFi space, or new games created for blockchain being developed, 2023 continues to offer opportunities for GameFi, and for some, a need.

And we expect things to start to move in the coming months, between Daniel Agegre from Activision Blizzard being named CEO of Yuga Labs, to the gaming software company, Animoca Brands announcing a $2B investment fund for the metaverse.

Naturally with big name players and talent investing in this space, we do expect higher quality games and metaverse platforms that will offer a vision for what the future of this space holds. With any development timeline though, it’s more than likely that we’ll need to wait for the better part of the year before we begin to see hints of the fruits of labor from these announcements.

With our longstanding belief in the opportunity that DeFi brings, our latest Notifs announcement will be continuing to explore how we can bring information and customization to our community members, while exploring how we can integrate aspects of Web3 and NFTs into our offerings! We’re excited to see the development work that will be coming out from the market in the next few months and expect these to be milestone moments that will push the boundaries of digital assets in the years to come.
