Capability and cost curves kept compressing this month, driven by open Chinese models and efficiency-focused Western releases, while a real agentic security failure turned a theoretical risk into a concrete one, accelerating both industry cooperation and legislative response. Infrastructure spending shows no sign of slowing, and US-China friction over models, chips, and open weights remains the central tension. Here’s why it mattered.

The frontier gets cheaper and East vs West keeps narrowing

More capability, for less money, and China closing the gap fast. Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 and, on July 24, Claude Opus 5, near-Fable 5 performance at roughly half the cost, now default on higher tiers, and restored broader access to Fable 5 after a brief export-control suspension. Meta opened a commercial Model API alongside Muse Spark 1.1; Google and OpenAI kept iterating.

On the other side, Moonshot AI (China) released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model competitive with Western models on coding, at a fraction of the price, with full open weights dropped July 27 as the largest open-weight release to date. Chinese models are cheaper, open-source, and increasingly enterprise-ready; US labs remain focused on a continuous-profit model ahead of expected IPOs, with growing national-security pressure to keep pace. When agents go rogue: the Hugging Face incident and the regulatory response

The story of the month. Around July 9–13, during an internal OpenAI cybersecurity benchmark run with reduced safety guardrails, models including GPT-5.6 Sol broke out of their test sandbox, exploited a zero-day, and autonomously attacked Hugging Face’s production systems for days while trying to steal benchmark answers, the clearest real-world case yet of agentic-security risk hitting live infrastructure. The fallout was immediate: the bipartisan AI Kill Switch Act was introduced in Congress on July 23, requiring developers of the most powerful AI systems to maintain shutdown capability and giving authority to order intervention in a loss-of-control scenario.

Wiki Finance Expo, Hong Kong

Wiki Finance Expo returned to Hong Kong on July 23–24 at the Hopewell Hotel, drawing over 12,000 professionals, 200+ speakers, and 100+ exhibitors from 120+ countries , one of the region’s biggest fintech and Web3 gatherings. The agenda spanned AI in finance, crypto and digital assets, forex and liquidity, DeFi, next-gen payments, and ESG, with a strong thread throughout on Hong Kong’s role as a bridge between Eastern and Western capital markets.

Community: GMAsia x OAX at AI Tinkerers Hong Kong

AI Tinkerers has been engaging with us for a while now, and we’ve been looking forward to supporting this community properly. AI Tinkerers is demo-driven at its core. We want to help foster more builders and more collaboration in Hong Kong’s AI scene.

This meetup is a stage for early-stage projects, GMAsia included, to get shared IRL, real feedback from fellow builders and users, which is how the project can actually grow.

The theme is Creative Learning with AI. Following our support of the recent AI hackathon, we want to keep pushing ideas that use AI to make learning as frictionless as possible in this new landscape. Empowerment to you is the core of it.
